Hosted by the Northwest African American museum and planned in conjunction with 25+ community organizations and leaders, MLK60 honored the history of civil rights in Seattle, our community-leading elders, and, ever-poignantly, Dr. King’s 1961 visit to Seattle initiated by his long-time friend and beloved Seattle leader, the late Rev. Samuel B. McKinney of Mount Zion Baptist Church.

As a communications and digital media strategist for the Northwest African American Museum, my role entailed:

  • Designing and overseeing production of event signage and promotional materials

  • Overseeing design of event branding

  • Coordinating and hosting press conference featuring Dr. King’s son Martin Luther King Jr. III

  • Creating and distributing media to the press

  • Facilitating a prime-time television interview with Martin Luther King Jr. III

  • Creating documentary short that features Black community leaders reflecting on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1951 visit to Seattle.

In November 2021, NAAM inducted eight civil rights leaders from the Pacific Northwest into the first cohort of its newly formed Elders Circle. The occasion was marked in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's first and only visit to Seattle.

A three-day event bringing together community members, distinguished elders and top officials, MLK60 celebrated the 60th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s only visit to Seattle.
